Timpview beats Mountain View in Region 7 opener
There was quite a turnout for this highly anticipated matchup between the Timpview Thunderbirds (6-4, 1-0) and the Mountain View Bruins (5-5, 0-1). It was both teams' first region game of the season after a break from basketball for the holidays. Both teams were looking for a key win to begin the second part of the season and capture momentum for the tough games ahead. Timpview won the contest, pulling away in the fourth quarter for the 54-39 win.
It was a hard-fought, low-scoring game for the first three quarters of the contest. Both teams played very tough on the defense. However, the offensive drives also saw a lot of aggressive play near the basket. Well-earned layups and expertly placed baskets up against the board were the norm in much of the first half.
Timpview opened the second quarter with back-to-back 3-point shots, which helped them get some of the momentum back in the game as they were came back from a small deficit. Timpview started to find open shots against a tough defensive scheme, and by the end of the first half, they had taken a small lead.
"It was a pretty close, hard-fought first half," said Timpview head coach Perry Wildeboer. "It feels good to have won that one against a good Mountain View team. We hadn't played basketball in something like two or three weeks so we may have felt a bit rusty but I think we played well tonight."
Timpview opened the second half continuing the very tough man-to-man defense. As the game started nearing the climax, things started to get chippy on the court. A bit of pushing and shoving freed the ball up for Timpview forward Eli Robinson, who took it down the court and finished off the play with a dunk.
Mountain View attempted a couple 3-pointers, but hard-nose offense close to the basket was still the story of the game. Patience was key, as both teams passed the ball around quite a bit before shooting, which helped them get the good shots at the basket.
Towards the end of the game, the fans got to see some beautiful passes and layups. Mountain View's Hunter Westwood showed off his arm a bit with a strike down the length of the court to set up a one-on-one fast break which ended in a score for the Bruins.
The score going into the fourth quarter was 33-27, and it was still anybody's game. The trench-warfare style of play that had seemed to dominate the first three-quarters of the game seemed to have been forgotten by the Thunderbirds. They started to score points quickly and took a late lead thanks to hitting their free-throws. Timpview's defense started to tighten up, not allowing Mountain View to make the inside shots that they had been able to make earlier. The Bruins began to put together long, ineffective drives ending in no points and giving the ball back to the Thunderbirds.
Timpview eventually took a comfortable lead late in the game. Late in the game, Mountain View started playing a half-court press but it set up holes inside that Timpview was able to exploit.
"We started taking advantage of that really well late in the game," said Wildeboer, "and we were also able to spread the ball around and find some wide-open three's. We showed patience when we were in the lead and that lead to some good shots. They key, though, to that last little burst there was the fact that we were able to get good stops on defense. We played much better defensively in the second half, and we were really disciplined on defense."
Timpview ended the game in full stride on a 21-12 run and its first region victory of the season.
"I feel like we are in a good position right now," continued Wildeboer. "There were some games earlier in the season that maybe we should have won but the preseason has prepared us well for a tough region schedule ahead. Right now, what we are going to focus on are good fundamentals on defense. We are playing well, but we aren't where we want to be. We're getting there, though. We are starting to come along."
Timpview travels to Timpanogos (3-7, 1-0) next Tuesday to try and keep their momentum alive. Mountain View faces a tough opponent in Provo (7-2, 1-0) on Wednesday, after the Bulldogs downed Lehi in a thriller between two of the best teams in the state.

Timpview Can't Stop AF's Big Three
These days, it seems that every championship basketball team has one thing in common: "The Big Three."In the pros, Boston has Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen and the L.A. Lakers have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Derek Fisher.
When it comes to Utah boys high school basketball, American Fork's big three of Ben Beddes, Marcel Davis and Quincy Bair are starting to become as good as it gets.
The trio shone on Tuesday night, as the Cavemen improved their record to a perfect 5-0 by holding on for a 60-57 victory over the visiting Timpview T'Birds.
"They're so talented," Beddes said of Bair and Davis."I don't think anybody will stop them."
Timpview had trouble stopping Beddes as well. Beddes, who came into the game under the weather, managed to drop a game-high 19 points and grab nine rebounds in the winning effort.
Bair contributed 17 points for American Fork, while Davis also picked up 17 points to go along with his six rebounds and six steals.
"I thought Marcel was a big force tonight," American Fork head coach Doug Meacham said. "We're waiting for the light to click on in Quincy's head, how good he can be. He wants to become a good player and that is so fun to coach kids that have the kind of drive."
The three players combined for 53 of the Cavemen's 60 points.
American Fork held just a 58-57 lead after Timpview's Josh Warner connected on a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left in the contest. Davis was fouled and picked up points No. 16 and 17 with two free throws to put American Fork up three.
Warner raced down the court in the final seconds and pulled up for an open 3-pointer to try and tie the game, but was unable to connect.
"We just knew we were going to win," Beddes said. "Our confidence has changed in the last year. We got together and knew we were going to win."
The Cavemen entered the final quarter of play with a 45-36 lead, but back-to-back buckets from Christian Covey brought the T'Birds to within five points. After a Beddes jumper, Timpview's Ky Raymond knocked down his second shot from beyond the arc to pull the T'Birds to within four, 47-43.
Raymond finished with a team-high 14 points on the night.
The final two minutes of the game saw the Cavemen knock down 8-of-10 free throws en route to the victory.
"Free throws win games," Beddes said."When we get to the line and hit our free throws, we'll be a pretty hard team to beat."
The two teams combined for 39 free throw attempts on the night.
Early on, it was all T'Birds, as six Timpview players found the scoreboard in the first quarter to give the T'Birds a 17-11 lead.
But a Beddes layup capped an 8-0 American Fork run to start the second quarter and gave the Cavemen their first lead of the game at 19-17. After a Timpview bucket tied the game moments later, it was Davis who connected on a layup just past the midway mark in the second quarter to put the Cavemen up for good.
Meacham's team has started out strong and with each win, the confidence continues to grow.
"Last year when we played these guys, we had over 20 turnovers," Meacham said."We're a different team. We've grown up a year."
American Fork will return to action Dec. 26 at the Desert Heat Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. Timpview fell to 3-2 on the season and will participate in the Bishop Gorman Holiday Classic in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Team Photos
I hope everyone will add pictures of their players. Once we begin to get team pictures during games and activities we should add them. Feel free to add a funny or moving story as they arise. It may turn out to be a fun catolog of the years events.
There is a way to link video highlights and newspaper articles as well. Dig around and feel free to edit and add. These pages should be a living scrapbook and information for all the families and friends. Even those without access can view and make comments they just can't edit the content. Feel to subscribe as well so when there is an update you get notified. That will be an easy way for all to communicate.
Again, I'm new to this so if you any of you are savvy users please help us get the most out it.
If you didn't receive access to add more than comments and want to please e-mail me for the username and password to do so. We encourage all to add.
I look forward to a fun season and wish all the young men the best!
